What iGaming Platforms Need To Get Right In Emerging Markets

The iGaming industry continues to invest in artificial intelligence, personalisation, gamification and increasingly sophisticated player experiences. Operators are competing through broader betting markets, promotions and content, but the speed at which players can access these products remains a fundamental consideration.

This is particularly relevant across emerging markets in Africa, Latin America, MENA and parts of Asia, where differences in connectivity, device capabilities and digital infrastructure can expose platform weaknesses that may be less noticeable in more developed markets.

For operators expanding into these regions, platform speed should therefore be considered alongside features, localisation capabilities and product flexibility.

Emerging Markets Expose The Cost Of Slow Technology

Platforms with resource-heavy frontends can struggle on older smartphones, even when users have relatively stable internet connections. Servers located significant distances from players can also introduce network delays.

These issues can add friction throughout the player journey, including opening a sportsbook, finding an event, checking odds and placing a bet.

GR8_TECH recently benchmarked more than 15 iGaming B2C websites, including sportsbooks, casinos and crypto-focused platforms.

According to its findings, the average Speed Index among the tested sites was 5.3 seconds. More than 40% recorded speeds above 5.8 seconds, while approximately one-third achieved a mobile loading speed below the benchmark’s 3.4-second threshold.

The results highlight the differences in performance that can exist between iGaming platforms.

Balancing Speed With Localisation And Flexibility

Historically, improving platform speed could require developers to simplify products by reducing features, removing resource-heavy interface elements or limiting customisation.

For operators targeting emerging markets, however, this can create another challenge. Different jurisdictions and audiences can require extensive localisation across payments, betting layouts, promotions and content.

Technology developments increasingly allow platforms to combine performance with these customisation requirements.

GR8_TECH said its latest frontend rebuild moved its platform from a legacy React-based client-side rendering model to server-side rendering using Qwik. This allows more of the rendering process to take place before a page reaches the player's device.

The company also changed its network infrastructure to bring rendering and backend connectivity closer to end users.

Following the changes, GR8_TECH said its platform achieved a Speed Index of 1.72 seconds and Lighthouse Performance scores of between 90 and 95.

The platform has retained CMS-driven, widget-based customisation across areas including the sportsbook, casino lobby, registration, cashier and promotional pages.

Platform Performance As A Business Consideration

Platform speed can also have implications beyond the technical performance of a website or application.

Faster navigation, registration and payment processes can reduce friction at important stages of the player journey, while consistent responsiveness can support the experience once players are active.

Performance can be particularly important for live betting, where users need to respond to changing markets within short periods. Delays in an interface can affect that experience regardless of the breadth of betting markets available.

For operators considering expansion into emerging markets, platform performance on the devices and networks used by local players should therefore form part of the technology selection process.

Speed alone does not determine the success of an iGaming platform, but ensuring products can operate consistently under real-world conditions can provide a stronger foundation for investments in localisation, content, personalisation and other player-facing features.
