PENN Entertainment Bets $20m on Alberta Expansion to Power Digital Recovery

PENN Entertainment is committing $20m (£15.7m) to its rollout in Alberta, positioning the Canadian province as a cornerstone of its digital recovery strategy and broader North American iGaming ambitions.
The operator’s interactive division narrowed its second-quarter losses to $9.5m in Q2 2026, representing a sharp improvement from the $62m loss recorded in the prior-year period. Full-year interactive losses are expected to hold at approximately $20m, an amount almost entirely attributable to upfront launch costs, multi-channel marketing campaigns, and a new commercial agreement with the Canadian Football League (CFL) in Alberta.
PENN Chief Financial Officer Felicia Hendrix indicated that while marketing expenses in Alberta will cause Q3 to carry the largest quarterly digital loss of the year, the interactive segment remains on track to turn positive adjusted EBITDA in Q4 2026.
Commenting on early Canadian performance, Jay Snowden, Chief Executive Officer of PENN Entertainment, stated:
While still early, we are encouraged by our Alberta user and handle volumes on a per capita basis and believe our exclusive strategic partnership in Canada with the Toronto Blue Jays will complement the strength of theScore Bet brand there.
Canadian Footprint & Strategic Execution
PENN currently operates three distinct platforms across Canada’s regulated landscape—theScore Bet, theScore Casino, and Hollywood Casino—concentrating its digital strategy heavily on Ontario, Alberta, and regulated US iCasino states.
The company expects its Canadian operations to yield per-capita player values similar to its established presence in Ontario, leveraging local brand equity through theScore’s media ecosystem.
