UK Government Consults on Rules to Differentiate Bingo Halls from Gaming Centres

The UK Government has launched a consultation aimed at creating a clearer distinction between bingo premises and adult gaming centres (AGCs), while ensuring that all land-based gambling venues operate under a licence that accurately reflects their activities.

Officials noted a “growing number” of bingo halls that primarily host gaming machines, making them “increasingly difficult to distinguish from adult gaming centres.”

Under the proposed reforms, all bingo venues would be required to designate a “bingo area”, occupying a minimum portion of their total floor space. This area would be reserved exclusively for bingo activity.

The government added that it is also seeking views on additional rules for these designated areas, such as prohibiting cabinet and in-fill style gaming machines and mandating a minimum number of active bingo positions.

Dominic Mansour, CEO of Buzz Bingo, welcomed the consultation, stating:

“We welcome the opportunity to respond to the government’s consultation on bingo. As the UK’s leading bingo operator, we believe reform in the sector is much needed. Bingo venues have a proud history of serving communities, offering a safe, low-stakes, and community-focused form of entertainment that promotes social inclusion.

We believe there is a real benefit to a clearer distinction for bingo specifically, and reforms should remove the financial burden currently being taken on by the industry. A long-term, viable operating model is essential for both our business and the communities we serve.”

The consultation forms part of the government’s wider efforts to modernise gambling regulation in the UK and ensure that traditional community-led bingo halls remain distinct from gaming-focused establishments.
