Barclays has announced a new 72-hour gambling transaction block which will be introduced within the next few weeks. This has been designed to give customers additional control over their spending on gambling sites.

If customers choose to activate the block all gambling-related transactions will be automatically declined, whether actioned by Visa or Apple Pay, unlike some other measures that can take 24-hours to become effective.

The idea to introduce a 72-hour temporary block came directly from customer feedback in an attempt to create responsible gambling practices, giving customers a ‘real pause for thought’.

Barclays has brought in additional measures to help people manage their spending. These include cash withdrawal limits as well as giving customers the option to freeze their cards altogether.

The call for responsible gambling came from the charity GambleAware who wish to standardise gambling blocking options to all bank accounts nationwide. Research has now discovered that 60% of current accounts in the UK have added a block to monitor gambling transactions.

Back in 2018 Barclays became one of the first banks to introduce a block to gambling transactions. This year HSBC introduced gambling block options. This function has been used approximately 570,000 times, 187,000 being from mid-March. All of these measures are being considered to carry on enjoying gambling online safely.
