Meridianbet Completes Acquisition of Maltese Retail Operator Fairbet

Meridianbet, a subsidiary of Las Vegas-based Golden Matrix Group, has completed the acquisition of Fairbet Ltd, a licensed retail gaming and betting operator in Malta.

The transaction transfers full ownership of Fairbet to Meridianbet and adds nine retail locations across Malta and Gozo to its existing estate. As a result, Meridianbet’s total number of storefronts in the Maltese market rises to 20.

Following integration, the combined retail network is expected to operate more than 60 sports betting terminals alongside over 120 slot machines, significantly increasing Meridianbet’s land-based exposure in the country.

Meridianbet chief executive Zoran Miloševi? said the deal would strengthen the group’s retail infrastructure and technological reach in Malta, noting that the company’s systems will now serve the majority of licensed retail gaming operations in the jurisdiction.

Before the acquisition, Meridianbet and Fairbet already had a technology partnership in place. That relationship has now evolved into full operational control, with Fairbet’s retail locations being brought under the Meridianbet brand. The company confirmed that integration of operations, technology and retail management is taking place immediately.

Stronger position in a highly restricted market

Malta’s retail gaming sector operates under one of Europe’s most restrictive licensing frameworks, with only three operators currently holding retail gaming licences nationwide. With Fairbet now fully acquired, Meridianbet controls two of those licences, giving it a dominant position in the local land-based betting market.

Regulatory oversight in Malta imposes high capital requirements and strict compliance standards, creating significant barriers to entry and limiting new competition. Meridianbet said the acquisition aligns with its broader strategy of pursuing growth in high-barrier markets where licence scarcity supports consolidation.

Malta has served as an operational base for Meridianbet since 2008, and the company has maintained a licensed presence since the early stages of the country’s regulated gaming framework. The Fairbet deal forms part of Meridianbet’s ongoing approach of combining organic growth with selective mergers and acquisitions in tightly controlled jurisdictions.
