The Role of PR in Building Trust for iGaming Brands

An Op-ed by Nikki Morgan, PR Account Manager at GameOn

The Role of PR in Building Trust for iGaming Brands

The idea that trust is the hardest thing to earn and the easiest thing to lose is never truer than it is in the iGaming industry. It is the most valuable currency we have, and yet many companies, quite fittingly, seem to enjoy gambling with it by failing to treat their PR and communications as a serious part of their business infrastructure.

Consistent communication and PR are among the most proven ways to earn trust. Unfortunately, many companies still view PR as a luxury. Something they can add on once everything else is launched and there is budget left over; it's a nice-to-have, but the first thing to be cut when the purse strings need to be tightened.

Not only is that mentality wrong, but it can also be extremely costly. Having the right PR infrastructure in place can not only help you build credibility and a strong reputation but also rescue you in moments of need and keep you ready to weather any storms your business or the wider industry might face.

Consistent Scrutiny

Our industry operates under a level of scrutiny that most others will never encounter, and this comes from every direction. Regulators are constantly monitoring your compliance and moving goalposts; partners want to see a commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices; and public opinion of the industry is always going to be volatile.

However, this works both ways. The same environment that can punish poor PR and blunders also rewards reputational strengths and brands that invest in building a strong profile. As the industry continues to mature, there is more emphasis than ever before on compliance, and this has a huge impact.

Reputation is everything, and brands that understand this treat their PR as part of their business. The result of this is a public profile that holds up to regulators, operating partners, and the general public.

Having this foundation in place is essential, especially in times of crisis. Brands that only use PR reactively in times of need will find themselves in a restrictive position, whereas those who have curated strong reputations over time and have goodwill on their side are going to be much better placed to deal with bumps in the road.

This also extends beyond just reputational benefits. In the age of mergers and acquisitions and consolidation, due diligence often covers more than just your financials, and having a strong compliance PR record in an industry where trust and reputation are so highly valued can make or break a deal.

Building Credibility

Effective PR in iGaming is about much more than just press releases and product launches. It’s about making the right statements, boosting your reputation and earning credibility. Making sure your leadership team are in the right conversations and sending out the right signals about their products and wider industry discussions. Consistency in communication, whether that’s through editorials, roundtable discussions, panel appearances, or a mix of everything, is absolutely essential.

Good PR does not just put you in the conversation, though; it can also help you shape it. Consistent messaging is an excellent way to signal trust to regulators. Brands that engage in discussions about responsible gambling, player protection, and compliance build credibility in the media and the industry that regulators take note of.

This kind of positioning can lead to direct engagements from regulators, with respected brands often being asked on board to consult around upcoming changes and developments. This visibility can also have a commercial effect, as it can help you attract partners who share those values and position you strongly with potential investors.

In turn, working with the right partners will also build goodwill with customers and help you make a reputation outside of the industry. All of this is achievable with a strong, consistent PR strategy.

A Worthwhile Investment

For a long time, PR has been treated as a luxury for iGaming brands - something that can be bolted on to help get extra attention when needed. However, in a space that is so heavily scrutinised and competitive, effective communications, branding, and crisis management should be seen as pillars of a good business, not optional extras. If GameOn’s time in the iGaming industry has taught us anything, it’s that trust and your reputation are the most valuable assets you can have, and they are worth investing in.
