Coinbase Set to Launch Prediction Markets and Tokenised Stocks at December Showcase

Coinbase Global is preparing to unveil prediction markets and tokenised stocks at a showcase event on 17 December, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The move would see the US-based crypto exchange enter two of the fastest-growing areas within digital finance.

The proposed products would allow users to speculate on future events through prediction markets and trade blockchain-based versions of listed equities. Bloomberg reports that the tokenised stocks will be issued directly by Coinbase rather than via third-party partners.

A Coinbase spokesperson declined to confirm specific details ahead of the event, stating only:

“Tune in to the livestream on Dec. 17 to find out what new products Coinbase is shipping.”

Coinbase has previously highlighted prediction markets as a natural progression for digital assets. In a blog post published in September, the company described event contracts as a logical extension of existing blockchain use cases. This strategy was further underlined last month when Coinbase announced a USDC custodial partnership with Kalshi, the largest prediction market platform in the US.

“Today we’re announcing that Kalshi…has chosen Coinbase Custody to safeguard their USDC – giving participants peace of mind when they trade on real-world outcomes,” the company said at the time.

The planned launch comes as competition in the sector intensifies. Gemini recently secured regulatory approval to offer yes/no prediction contracts, while platforms including Crypto.com and Robinhood have already expanded into the space. Robinhood has rolled out Kalshi-powered prediction markets, and both Kraken and Robinhood currently offer tokenised US stocks and ETFs outside the United States.

Activity in tokenised equities continues to grow, with monthly transfer volumes rising by 32% over the past 30 days to $1.45 billion, according to rwa.xyz. Prediction markets have also seen strong growth, driven by wider adoption of smart contracts and stablecoins. Coinbase Ventures Head Hoolie Tejwani described the segment as a “killer on-chain use case”.

As the largest crypto exchange in the US, Coinbase serves more than 105 million users, including 10.8 million monthly active users. The company processed approximately $1 trillion in trading volume last year, largely from institutional clients — a factor analysts believe could help accelerate liquidity in prediction markets.

It remains unclear whether Coinbase intends to introduce sports-related event contracts, an area where some competitors are already active.
