Premier League Introduces Semi-Automated Offside Technology with Genius Sports Partnership

The Premier League has selected Genius Sports Limited as its official Semi-Automated Officiating (SAOT) supplier, marking a significant advancement in offside decision-making technology.
This cutting-edge system, powered by Genius Sports' AI and data platform, GeniusIQ, will be implemented in every Premier League stadium, with full deployment expected for the 2024/25 season.
GeniusIQ utilizes computer vision cameras to generate comprehensive 3D models of all players, the ball, and the offside line within seconds. This technology aims to enhance both the speed and accuracy of offside decisions, minimizing game interruptions.
The Premier League expects this innovation to substantially reduce the time needed for offside rulings and ensure the consistent application of offside lines.
Tony Scholes, Premier League Chief Football Officer, emphasized:
"The introduction of semi-automated offside is a crucial step in maintaining the flow of the game in the Premier League. We believe that by adopting the latest and most precise technology, we will significantly shorten the time taken for offside decisions while ensuring consistent application of the offside lines."
Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke expressed his excitement, stating:

Genius Sports has a longstanding relationship with the Premier League, providing data and technology services, including powering the Premier League Data Zone, which delivers live tracking insights and statistics. This new agreement further extends their existing partnership, with their AI-powered data now utilized by all 20 Premier League teams.
This announcement of the SAOT system follows Genius Sports’ recent report of a 23% revenue increase to $119.7 million for Q1 2024. The company has also secured exclusive betting rights with Football DataCo until 2029 and launched AI-powered in-game highlights in collaboration with Brentford FC.
