UK Gambling Commission Introduces Simpler Rules for Casino Promotions

The UK Gambling Commission has confirmed a set of new rules aimed at making gambling promotions safer and easier for consumers to understand, with a particular focus on reducing complexity and potential harm.

Under the updated framework, operators will no longer be allowed to offer promotional deals that require customers to take part in more than one type of gambling activity. In addition, strict limits will be placed on how many times bonus funds must be wagered before winnings can be withdrawn.

Mixed-product promotions to be prohibited

The new rules will ban so-called mixed-product promotions, where bonuses are awarded on the condition that customers gamble across different products, such as placing sports bets and playing casino games.

The Commission said evidence shows that consumers face a higher risk of harm when gambling on multiple products rather than a single one. Mixed promotions can also lead to confusion due to complex terms and conditions, making it harder for players to understand what is required of them.

By removing these offers, the regulator aims to reduce both consumer risk and promotional complexity.

Wagering requirements capped at ten times

The Commission will also introduce a cap on bonus wagering requirements, limiting them to a maximum of ten times the bonus amount. This marks a significant shift away from offers that require consumers to re-stake winnings dozens of times before being able to cash out.

High wagering requirements have been identified as a source of confusion for players and may encourage longer and faster gambling sessions than intended. The new cap is designed to improve transparency and reduce the likelihood of harm associated with prolonged play.

Updates to social responsibility code

To support these changes, the Commission will revise the structure and wording of Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1, which governs rewards and bonuses. The amendments are intended to clarify regulatory expectations and ensure operators present promotional offers in a fairer and more straightforward way.

The changes form part of the Commission’s broader programme of consumer protection reforms, as it continues to implement measures designed to make gambling safer, fairer and easier to understand for UK customers.
