F1 Accelerates into Betting: Data, Deals & a New Era of Fan Engagement

Formula 1 is shifting gears — not just on track, but in the world of sports betting. With only 0.4% of the global sports betting market currently involving F1, the championship sees a massive opportunity to transform how fans engage with the sport.

At the BlackBook Motorsport Forum in London, Jonny Haworth, F1’s Commercial Partnerships Director, addressed this untapped potential:

“We move 0.4% of the sector, which is a bit crazy considering the size of Formula 1 and for a sport with low latency data in high volume, which is what drives betting.”

The championship is now pushing hard to change that. Its recent partnership with San Diego-based ALT Sports Data, announced in February 2025, is central to these ambitions. Specialising in real-time betting tech, ALT will help F1 deliver a next-gen live betting experience powered by AI and fast, flexible data.

From Spectators to Stakeholders

Until now, F1 betting was largely limited to pre-race predictions. But that’s about to change. Live, in-race betting will soon allow fans to wager on everything from pit-stop strategies and fastest laps, to overtaking chances and weather-influenced performance.

“We are working hard to have an engaging betting product that allows people to not only predict the final results, but use the data to be able to bet live,” Haworth confirmed.

A Sport Built for Betting

F1’s unpredictability — with weather shifts, technical failures, and team strategies constantly in flux — makes it ideal for live wagering. And with sweeping new technical regulations arriving in 2026, the on-track chaos (and betting potential) is only set to increase.

Timing the Launch Right

With F1 fandom booming — up 12% in 2024 to over 826 million global fans — the moment feels right. China’s post-COVID return and expanding digital engagement have created fertile ground for interactive experiences like betting.

But for F1, it’s not just about revenue. Betting is seen as a crucial way to meet the expectations of a modern, engaged viewer.

“It’s a great engagement tool,” Haworth said. “There are many different ways to engage in the sport than just sitting and watching a two-hour broadcast.”

What’s Next?

The 2025 season is already in full swing, with Japan’s Suzuka GP (April 4–6) next on the calendar. As F1 accelerates toward a data-driven, bettable future, the goal is simple: make fans part of the action, not just witnesses to it.

In the fast-changing world of motorsport, F1’s embrace of betting could be the ultimate game-changer — transforming passive viewers into active participants, and races into real-time, high-stakes entertainment.
