Brazil Cracks Down on Gambling Promotion Violations on YouTube

The Brazilian government has taken action against over 53 YouTube accounts and 25 channels found to be breaching gambling promotion guidelines.

YouTube recently updated its rules on gambling advertising, now prohibiting creators from referencing or directing viewers to illegal operators. This includes URLs, links in images or text, and verbal mentions. Additionally, advertisements must only link to websites with the regulated bet.br domain.

The National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports (Snaede), part of the Ministry of Sports, identified the violations, with offending videos promoting bets through “false promises of profit”. Each broadcast reached audiences of over 100,000 viewers.

The reported channels were flagged to the Ministries of Justice and the Federal Police, with the issue also discussed in a public hearing at the Supreme Federal Court. The Ministry of Justice subsequently launched an investigation, leading to the crackdown.

“This is a victory for the Ministry of Sports, Snaede, and the courage of Minister André Fufuca, who took this complaint forward,” said Giovanni Rocco, Snaede secretary.

“This result represents progress in protecting the most vulnerable families, who end up being deceived by scammers disguised as digital influencers.”

In other Brazil betting news, Belatra Games has announced that it will be showcasing its LatAm-focused gaming innovations at SAGSE.
