Dutch Gambling Market Shows Significant Growth

The Dutch Gambling Authority (KSA) has published its 2023 Market Scan and a monitoring report for the first half of 2024, highlighting substantial growth in the country's gambling market.

In 2023, the total gross gaming revenue (GSR) for the legal gambling market reached €4 billion ($4.38 billion), marking a 21.2% increase from 2022's €3.3 billion. This growth was mainly driven by the casino games sector, both online and offline. Although the GSR for land-based casinos rose by 19%, it still lags behind pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019.

Land-based casino games dominate the market, making up 33% of the total GSR, closely followed by lotteries at 30%, while sports betting remains the smallest sector at just 9%.

Despite the overall growth, Dutch gamblers still spend less per capita than the European average, with annual spending at €272 in 2023 compared to the European average of €339.

The online gambling sector has continued its upward trend, with the GSR for online gambling rising by 8% in the first half of 2024, reaching €752 million. Casino games against the house, such as table games and slot machines, lead the online market, accounting for 72% of the total GSR.

The number of online gambling accounts also grew in early 2024, averaging 1.07 million monthly, although the number of active players was lower, with approximately 455,000 people gambling each month.

Young adults aged 18-23 are becoming an increasingly significant part of the market, contributing 10.8% of the GSR in 2024, up from 9.6% in 2023. This demographic tends to spend less on gambling, with an average monthly loss of €55.
