AGA Expects $35 Billion in Legal Sports for 2024 NFL
The AGA projects that U.S. adults will wager $35 billion with legal sportsbooks throughout the season, a notable increase from the estimated $26.7 billion wagered during the 2023 NFL season.

As the 2024 NFL season begins, the American Gaming Association (AGA) has released its first-ever legal handle estimate for the league's season. The AGA projects that U.S. adults will wager $35 billion with legal sportsbooks throughout the season, a notable increase from the estimated $26.7 billion wagered during the 2023 NFL season.
This growth is attributed to the expanding and maturing legal sports betting industry in the U.S. Since last season, Maine, North Carolina, and Vermont have launched new legal sports betting markets, contributing to this surge.
The AGA’s latest data also highlights growing public support for the legal sports betting industry. An overwhelming 90% of past-year sports bettors stress the importance of choosing legal and regulated sportsbooks, while 88% believe the legal industry is committed to responsible gaming and addressing problem gambling. Moreover, 85% of respondents agree on the effectiveness of responsible gaming programs, an increase from 83% in 2023.
Public backing for legal, regulated sports betting in the U.S. continues to rise, with 75% of American adults now in favor, up from 73% last year. Notably, 96% of past-year sports bettors are aware of at least one responsible gaming resource, and 57% reported increased exposure to responsible gaming messaging over the past year.
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller commented:
"With the excitement of another NFL season upon us, Americans are placing their bets with the confidence that the legal sports betting market is prioritizing consumer protection and responsibility."
He added:
"As the season unfolds, the AGA and our members remain dedicated to working with leagues, regulators, and other stakeholders to ensure fans have the knowledge and tools to keep sports betting a safe, fun part of the gameday experience."
