Survey Reveals Betting Companies' Dominance in Global Football Sponsorships
The study examined a broad range of football championships across 100 countries.

The sports betting industry has solidified its position as a leading force in global football sponsorships, according to a comprehensive study analyzing the top 100 football championships worldwide. The findings reveal that 26 of these tournaments are sponsored by betting companies, highlighting the sector's growing influence across the sports sponsorship landscape.
Key Insights from the Study
The study examined a broad range of football championships across 100 countries. This included 52 tournaments selected based on their high revenue in 2022, along with others chosen according to FIFA national team rankings, club rankings by continental confederations, and a few chosen randomly to provide a balanced view.
Major findings include:
- Betting Sector Sponsorship: Out of the 100 championships analyzed, 26 have betting companies as their title sponsors, making the betting sector the most dominant in football sponsorships.
- Financial Sector Sponsorship: The financial industry comes in second, with sponsorships in 13.5 championships, including shared title sponsorship in the Paraguayan Championship.
- Telecommunications Sponsorship: Telecommunications ranks third, with 12.5 championships under its sponsorship umbrella, again reflecting instances of shared sponsorship agreements.
- Other Sectors: Additional industries with sponsorship representation include consumer goods (6 championships), retail (5), communication (3), technology (3), automotive (2), oil and gas (2), real estate (2), and unions (1).
Regional Sponsorship Trends
The research also uncovered significant regional variations in sponsorship patterns:
Asia and Africa: In these regions, none of the 16 Asian and 17 African tournaments are sponsored by betting companies. Instead, the financial, automotive, and telecommunications sectors are more prominent.
Europe: In stark contrast, Europe is dominated by betting sector sponsorships, with 20 of the 46 analyzed championships sponsored by betting companies, demonstrating a strong and established market presence.
South America: Similar to Europe, South America shows substantial engagement from betting companies, with 50% of the 10 Conmebol tournaments having such sponsors.
North America: In North America, out of 11 championships, three are sponsored by financial companies, while another three lack any betting sponsorships.
Sponsorship Dynamics in High-Revenue Championships
Among the championships generating the most revenue, there is a notable trend towards reduced reliance on title sponsorships. Of the 50 most profitable tournaments, only 14% do not have a title sponsor.
However, this trend becomes more pronounced among the 10 most profitable championships, where 40% have opted out of such sponsorships. This suggests that more established leagues, like the Premier League, tend to avoid selling title sponsorships. Interestingly, though, 11 of the 20 elite clubs in English football have sponsorship agreements with betting companies.
