SuperBook Sports Shuts Down Operations in Eight US States

Late Friday, July 19, SuperBook Sports became the latest casualty in the digital sports betting world, shutting down its operations in eight states. The company, which operates its flagship retail sportsbook at the Westgate in Las Vegas, continues to operate online in Nevada.

At 8:38 p.m. ET, the company tweeted that it had ceased its platforms in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia as of 8 p.m. ET that day. SuperBook is the fourth platform to discontinue operations this year.

Earlier in 2024, Prophet Exchange, SaharaBets, and Unibet also closed. Like these companies, SuperBook struggled to gain significant market share in states outside of Nevada. SuperBook is renowned for its extensive retail location in Nevada and its NFL SuperContests. While the company had plans to extend these contests to other states, it was unable to do so without violating the Wire Act, and local alternatives did not come to fruition.

SuperBook's shutdown will free up licenses in several states with caps on the number of licenses permitted. Specifically, a tribal license will eventually be available in Arizona, allowing a new operator to enter the previously "full" market. SuperBook was previously partnered with the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.
