Ohio Republicans Advocate For Legalisation of Online Casinos and iLottery

Three Ohio House Republicans have submitted a joint letter to the state advocating for the legalization of online casinos and ilottery, highlighting the potential "net benefit" to Ohio.

Representatives Jay Edwards, Jeff LaRe, and Cindy Abrams emphasized the importance of legalizing iGaming, including online casinos and lotteries. Online sports betting has been legal and operational in Ohio since January 2023.

"While the state should proceed with caution and care with any expansion of this magnitude, with the right regulatory framework, these types of gaming can thrive with nominal impact to our current system," the representatives stated.

Study Commission Report

The letter accompanies a study commission report released on Friday, July 12, detailing the future of gaming in Ohio. According to PlayUSA, the commission met four times, including a session on online casinos in February. The 354-page report is largely based on written testimony provided during these hearings.

Potential Legislation in 2025?

The representatives' letter suggests that Ohio might see the first legislation for online casinos next year. It noted the "tremendous potential" in legalizing online casinos and ilottery.

"Looking at other states who have implemented either or both ilottery and igaming, we see significant increases in tax revenues generated with greater participation. Additionally, in-person sales continued to increase," the letter mentioned.

"This can largely be attributed to more people participating in the market on their phones and becoming more comfortable and knowledgeable about doing it at a physical location."

While over 25 states have legalized digital sports betting, legalizing online gambling has proven more challenging, with only seven states currently offering it.
