Danish Authorities Forge Agreement to Combat Illegal Gambling Marketing

The Danish Consumer Ombudsman, the Gambling Advertising Board, and the Danish Gambling Authority have established a new partnership to better coordinate efforts against illegal gambling advertising in Denmark.

This initiative seeks to streamline activities and prevent redundancy in addressing breaches by gambling firms.

The agreement delineates each body's responsibilities. The Consumer Ombudsman will supervise gambling companies' adherence to the Marketing Act and other consumer protection laws.

The Danish Gambling Authority will ensure compliance with the Gambling Act's rules on game marketing, including sales promotions.

The Gambling Advertising Board, formed by the industry, will manage complaints about marketing practices that violate the industry's code of conduct, which promotes social responsibility, protects vulnerable groups, and mitigates gambling addiction.

Under the new arrangement, the Gambling Advertising Board will refer cases to the Consumer Ombudsman or the Gambling Authority if companies fail to comply with the board’s critiques or violate the authorities' regulations.

In return, the Consumer Ombudsman and the Gambling Authority will direct complaints to the Gambling Advertising Board if the issues fall under the industry’s code of conduct but do not infringe on regulatory rules.

The three entities will regularly share relevant case information and hold annual meetings to ensure continuous coordination. This collaboration aims to strengthen the regulatory framework and enforcement against illegal gambling marketing.

Additionally, the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, will conduct a third round of anti-money laundering (AML) training on 31 October. This session, organized with several Danish authorities, seeks to enhance operational knowledge and experience sharing among entities subject to AML regulations. Following high participation in previous sessions in November 2023 and April 2024, this additional training has been scheduled.

Furthermore, Spillemyndigheden will implement new licensing rights for game suppliers starting in 2025. This development follows a recent report showing a 6.9% decline in monthly gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Denmark, amounting to DKK 595 million ($86.4 million) for April.
