What Makes Indian Players Feel at Home?
An Op-ed by Aleksandra Mouton, Slotegrator

India has quietly become one of the most closely watched markets in the global iGaming industry.
With a massive population, spreading telecommunications connectivity, and a widespread passion for gaming and sports (especially cricket, which dominates the national conversation), India is top of the list for many operators thinking about expanding.
One of the first questions they’ll ask themselves is this: What do Indian players expect from a casino lobby?
Brands that don’t properly localize are the first to fail. Taking cues from language and culture is a starting point, but you’re going to need more than “write the website in Hindi” and “offer cricket” if you want your platform to be accepted; localization requirements go all the way down to preferred bonus mechanics and screen layout.
Let’s take a look.
What are they here for?
As always, every UX decision will be driven by your understanding of what your players actually want.
Indian players tend to fall into two, potentially overlapping categories: sports-oriented and lottery-oriented, with the additional dimension of retention-driven players (those who are interested in the benefits they can get from loyalty schemes).
This makes game choice fairly clear. Sports betting, with a main focus on cricket, card games, lotteries and other instant games, and fantasy sports all perform well.
Table games are also big — and there are relevant regional specifics: Andar Bahar isn't just a nice add-on, it’s a mainstay that players will miss if it’s not there. Live casino isn’t as vital as the other options, but that doesn’t mean drop it altogether; just don’t put it front-and-center like you would in a European-facing lobby.
Bonuses and loyalty
So your content strategy should center on sport, and cricket specifically, alongside lottery-type games. What bonuses and loyalty programs work best? How are you going to appeal to that third category of Indian player — those interested in retention systems?
Remember, this is a market that responds to clarity and excitement, not complexity.
That principle carries directly into bonus design. Mechanics built around chance and instant gratification — lucky draws, a wheel of fortune, random rewards — are far more effective than more convoluted structures. For example, complex quest chains and bonus-buy mechanics tend to underperform here. Indian players simply aren’t as interested in additional challenges as they are in more chances to win.
The main bonus focus should sit with reload bonuses, repeat rewards, and deposit rewards — mechanics that flat-out reward the habit of returning, rather than presenting tasks to be completed. Loyalty programs and tournaments are a high priority throughout, but they should be built around consistency and recognizable, near-immediate payoffs rather than the achievement-driven structures that suit other player bases.
Color scheme and imagery
As ever, aesthetic choices should flow from brand identity, which should itself be tailored to your audience.
For India, that means bright, festive, and emotional design — minimalist, muted palettes will register as bland and boring. The casino or sportsbook is an exciting experience, and it should be presented as such. Gold, orange, red, and dark blue are natural choices, chosen for the warmth and energy they convey.
As far as imagery goes, cricket bats are a great signal. Other sporting iconography is also a good idea. Trophies and gold coins are interpreted as contributing to the right kind of atmosphere. The visual language of traditional local festivals like Diwali will convey celebration and abundance.
Imagery should lean into cricket and sport more broadly, alongside trophies and gold coins, and can draw on the visual language of Indian festivals — color, celebration, and abundance.
Lobbies can also feature hero characters for players to admire or identify with. Sports figures reinforce the aspirational mood, and female figures can broaden the appeal beyond the typically narrow male-dominated sports betting audience.
Laying out the plan
So let's end with a quick hierarchy blueprint. The homepage structure that best serves Indian players runs as follows:
Hero Banner
Cricket Games
Sportsbook
New Games
Instant Games
Live Casino
Table Games
Virtual Sports
Lucky Draw
Wheel of Fortune
Loyalty Program
Tournaments
Footer
The side menu, meanwhile, should keep Cricket, Sports Promotions, Lucky Draw, and Loyalty within easy reach at all times — these are the levers Indian players return to most often, and they should be as easily accessible as possible.
Slotegrator will cover localization in depth in our upcoming ebook.
