UKGC Suspends BresBet And Bet St George Licences Over Compliance Concerns
The regulator has launched reviews into both operators over suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings.
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd with immediate effect after identifying suspected failures relating to social responsibility and anti-money laundering requirements.
The suspensions took effect on 28 August and will remain in place while the regulator conducts reviews into both businesses. The UKGC stressed that the action does not represent a final finding of wrongdoing, with the reviews intended to establish whether the operators are complying with their licensing obligations.
UKGC Launches Reviews Into Both Operators
The Commission has opened reviews under Section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005, which allows it to investigate where there are concerns that a licence holder may be unsuitable or failing to comply with regulatory requirements.
The UKGC has not disclosed the specific conduct that led to its enquiries, stating only that the reviews identified “suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings”.
BresBet operates bresbet.com under UKGC operating licence 065252-R-340096-002. The Sheffield-based company was incorporated in March 2021 and received its remote gambling permissions in February 2025, covering bingo, casino gaming, real-event betting and virtual-event betting.
Bet St George operates betstgeorge.com under licence 067818-R-341699-001. Incorporated in June 2025, the company received its four remote permissions in December of that year before launching its gambling website in March 2026.
Both companies are registered at the same address on Hawley Street in Sheffield, while Nicholas James Brereton is listed as a director of both businesses.
Customers Can Continue To Withdraw Funds
Despite the suspensions, customers of BresBet and Bet St George will continue to be able to access their accounts and withdraw funds. The Commission has instructed both businesses to ensure consumers are treated fairly and kept informed of any developments affecting them while the reviews continue.
The operators had offered a range of gambling products before their licences were suspended. BresBet provided sports and horse racing betting, including in-play markets, alongside virtual sports, casino games and live dealer products, while Bet St George offered sports and racing betting, virtual events, casino, live casino and bingo through a single account.
Neither company publicly reports its gambling revenue. BresBet’s latest accounts, covering the year to March 2025, recorded an average workforce of 14 employees and £3.5 million owed to creditors within one year, while Bet St George has yet to file accounts.
Latest UKGC Enforcement Action
The suspensions follow a series of recent enforcement actions by the UKGC involving anti-money laundering, safer gambling and customer protection requirements.
In August, QuinnBet (Gibraltar) Ltd agreed to pay £609,104 after the regulator identified shortcomings in its anti-money laundering controls and customer protection measures. Holland Park Leisure Ltd was also fined £150,000 following a failure to comply with self-exclusion requirements.
The investigations into BresBet and Bet St George remain ongoing, with their operating licences set to remain suspended until the Commission is satisfied that the businesses are compliant with their regulatory obligations.
