Cheltenham After the Roar: A Ring-Side Perspective from an On-Course Bookmaker

This piece has been written by David Lovell, Co-Founder of DragonBet

When Cheltenham draws to a close, much of the industry analysis centres on turnover, results and standout performances. But from an on-course bookmaker’s perspective, the Festival offers something far more valuable; a real-time insight into how betting is evolving at ground level.

Because Cheltenham is not just a showcase event. It is a live testing environment for the industry.

For those operating in the betting ring, the defining feature remains unchanged, the people. The ring continues to be one of the few places in modern betting where all customers, regardless of background or stake, engage on equal terms. There is a transparency and immediacy to it that is increasingly difficult to replicate elsewhere.

It is also a reminder of what betting, at its core, is meant to be;  instinctive, social and built on trust.

This year’s Festival reflected some subtle but important shifts.

Turnover was marginally down, which can largely be attributed to the absence of multiple short-priced favourites driving volume. However, ticket count was up, which is a key indicator that engagement remains strong. More people are participating, even if staking patterns are becoming more cautious or considered.

From the ring, races like the Champion Chase stood out. Outside of the Arkle, it was the biggest turnover heat of the week and developed into a classic one-horse book. The market gravitated heavily towards Majborough, with bookmakers keen to manage exposure and punters equally determined to side with it. That kind of alignment is rare and highlights how sentiment can still shape markets in a very traditional way.

At the other end of the spectrum, results such as Doctor Steinberg in the Albert Bartlett reinforced the unpredictable nature of the sport. Races like this, which are often overlooked from a mainstream perspective, continue to provide both opportunity and challenge, particularly for those willing to take a position.

But beyond individual races, Cheltenham also sits within a wider industry context that cannot be ignored.

On-course bookmakers, like their online counterparts, are operating within an increasingly complex regulatory framework. Affordability checks, enhanced compliance measures and ongoing policy changes are reshaping the betting landscape. While the betting ring remains relatively insulated from some of the friction seen online, the wider impact on customer behaviour and confidence is evident.

And yet, the resilience of the on-course model is clear.

The ring continues to deliver a form of engagement that is direct, uncomplicated and rooted in human interaction. There are no barriers to entry beyond being present. No interruptions to the experience. Just opinion, price and participation.

For us at DragonBet, that environment is not just part of the business — it is central to it.

Cheltenham also reinforces the importance of people behind the pitches. Strong teams, sharp judgement and the ability to react in real time remain critical. Moments across the week — including standout results identified and executed by those on the ground — underline the value of experience and insight in an increasingly data-driven industry.

There are also operational elements that deserve recognition. The support from the racecourse in facilitating logistics, and the continued efforts to showcase the betting ring to a wider audience, play an important role in maintaining its visibility and relevance.

Ultimately, Cheltenham serves as both a celebration and a checkpoint.

It highlights what the industry does well — engagement, excitement, community — while also reflecting the challenges it must navigate. For on-course bookmakers, it is a reminder that while the landscape may be changing, the fundamentals remain strong.

The opportunity now is to ensure those fundamentals are not lost.

Because if Cheltenham proves anything, it is that there is still a place — and a demand — for betting in its most authentic form.
