Super Group Withdraws Betway from Portugal Amid International Cost Review
The operator has relinquished its Portuguese licences as it sharpens its focus on higher-potential markets.

Super Group has confirmed the closure of Betway’s operations in Portugal after requesting the cancellation of the sportsbook’s local licences, marking another strategic withdrawal as the company reassesses its international footprint.
Portugal’s gambling regulator, the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos, confirmed that the licences covering online sports betting and online gaming were revoked at the operator’s request. The licences were held by GM Gaming Ltd, the Malta-based entity responsible for operating Betway in the country.
A Betway spokesperson said the decision followed a detailed review of market performance, with the company choosing to step back from Portugal in order to concentrate resources on jurisdictions with stronger growth prospects. The group stressed that ongoing market evaluations form part of its responsibilities as a publicly listed business.
The exit comes against the backdrop of continued growth in Portugal’s regulated betting market, which recorded higher customer numbers and rising gross gaming revenue in 2025, alongside increased regulatory scrutiny and enforcement activity against unlicensed operators.
Super Group has taken a similar approach in other regions in recent years, including the wind-down of its US operations and a decision not to pursue entry into Brazil. The company has instead prioritised markets where it believes returns are more sustainable, with Africa identified as a key area of focus for the Betway brand.
The move also follows wider cost pressures across mature European markets, as operators face rising taxes and compliance requirements. With the UK remaining a core territory for Super Group, the Portugal withdrawal reflects a broader effort to rebalance its international portfolio and protect long-term profitability.
