Delta Airlines Explores Passenger Appetite for In-flight Sports Betting

Delta Airlines has launched a new consumer survey aimed at gauging interest in potential in-flight entertainment offerings – including sports betting.

The airline’s latest questionnaire invites passengers to share their views on a range of free trial entertainment options that could be introduced during flights. These include complimentary access to music, films, podcasts, live news, anime, travel content, live television – and notably, a non-monetary version of sports betting.

However, under current US federal law, gambling aboard commercial aircraft remains prohibited. The 1962 Gambling Devices Act prevents in-flight wagering with real money, and the legal complexities of offering such services are compounded by the fact that sports betting is only regulated and legal in certain states.

That said, interest in sports wagering across the United States has grown rapidly since the repeal of PASPA in 2018 – and it appears Delta is exploring ways to future-proof its entertainment strategy in anticipation of more relaxed rules down the line.

The airline currently partners with DraftKings and, if it proceeds with any form of in-flight sportsbook-style offering, it is likely to centre around free-to-play betting experiences. These would serve as a gateway to encourage users to engage further with the platform once they have landed.

The move reflects a broader trend within the US aviation and tech space, where operators are testing innovative digital experiences to enhance the passenger journey – all while staying within the legal frameworks currently in place.
