Brazilian State Approves Gambling Awareness Week
Scheduled to take place every January, the campaign will align with the national “Janeiro Branco” mental health awareness month.

The Legislative Assembly of Paraíba (ALPB) has unanimously approved the creation of the State Week of Awareness on the Use of Gambling and Online Betting. Proposed by Deputy Michel Henrique (Republicans), the initiative aims to address growing public health concerns linked to gambling addiction in the region.
Scheduled to take place every January, the campaign will align with the national “Janeiro Branco” mental health awareness month. Henrique explained that this timing is intentional, designed to reinforce the month’s broader focus on mental well-being while drawing attention to the risks of excessive gambling.
“We opted to introduce this week of state awareness based on the context we live in today,” said Henrique. “All these gambling and betting have ruined many families and represent a matter of public health. People are burying themselves under debts, getting depressed, and some, unfortunately, even commit suicide. It is more than essential that this House, the public authorities as such, put the population on alert about this issue of urgency.”
The awareness week will include lectures, workshops, and public information campaigns aimed at educating citizens about the psychological, financial, and social consequences of gambling. Mental health professionals, financial advisors, and support networks will collaborate to provide resources and guidance for those affected.
The initiative also comes amid wider national discussions about the regulation of gambling in Brazil. While the debate continues over legalising and managing gambling operations, Paraíba’s campaign highlights the risks of a growing industry and underscores the need for responsible gambling measures and proactive mental health support.
The campaign forms part of a broader effort to tackle mental health challenges across the state. By integrating gambling awareness into “Janeiro Branco,” the programme strengthens the message that addressing addiction is part of a comprehensive public health approach.
With the bill now passed, the next phase will involve coordinating with social service and health agencies to design and deliver specific activities for the awareness week. Paraíba’s move could serve as a model for other Brazilian states aiming to raise awareness of gambling-related harms.
