Brazil's Regulated Betting Sector Clashes with Google’s Play Store Policy

Google has reaffirmed its decision to continue restricting sports betting apps on the Play Store in Brazil, despite the country's recent legalisation and regulation of the sector.

Currently, the Play Store—Android’s official app marketplace—only permits a narrow category of gambling-related apps. These include lottery applications published by Caixa Econômica Federal and horse racing apps. Sports betting apps remain banned, even though operators have been authorised to enter the Brazilian market since early 2025.

In a statement to Estadão, Google said:

“In Brazil, Google Play policies currently allow only a limited group of gambling apps, such as lottery apps published by Caixa Econômica Federal and horse racing apps. This policy remains unchanged. Any changes to our policies are carefully evaluated.”

This position has frustrated sports betting operators, who view the policy as inconsistent with Brazil’s legal framework. Many in the sector are now seeking support from the Ministry of Finance to pressure Google into reviewing its stance.

While Android remains Brazil’s dominant mobile operating system, iOS users face fewer restrictions. Apple has not issued a formal comment on its policy, but currently permits access to sports betting apps on its App Store.
