Entain's Rapid UK Comeback Drives Strong H2 Surge

Entain's revitalization efforts across its UK and Ireland operations have delivered faster-than-expected results, as both its gaming and sports betting divisions show significant recovery in the second half of the year, according to the company’s latest trading update.

The company also welcomed a leadership shift, with Gavin Isaacs stepping in as group CEO on 2 September. He’s collaborating closely with outgoing interim CEO Stella David to ensure a seamless transition. David is set to succeed Barry Gibson as chair on 30 September.

Entain’s UK and Ireland business faced a rocky start to the year, with a 6% dip in group net gaming revenue (NGR) during H1. The region was hit hard by regulatory changes, with gaming NGR falling 7% and sports NGR decreasing by 5%. Additionally, a 17% decline in online sports wagers contributed to an overall 8% drop in online revenue for the region.

However, Stella David had assured investors earlier that efforts to turn around the UK market were already in motion, and the company was poised to return to growth in the latter half of the year. Recent operational adjustments have allowed the group to achieve this goal ahead of schedule, with the trading update indicating that the UK & Ireland turnaround has materialized “earlier than expected.” The brand enjoyed great betting success with this year's Olympics.

The second half of the year has already seen marked improvements, with stronger sports betting volumes and higher margins driving up betting NGR. David noted during Entain’s H1 results, "In the UK, we have KPIs that are moving forward at a pace that gives us confidence in getting back to growth in that critical market for us." She added, "The good news is that we are starting to now see the delivery of those improvements."

The company attributed the success to several key initiatives, including simplifying customer journeys across its UK brands and launching a new Bet Builder feature just in time for the Premier League season. New loyalty schemes such as Lad Bucks and Coral Coins were also rolled out to enhance player engagement and encourage real-money activity.

Entain’s Group CCO, Sameer Deen, emphasized the importance of a fresh approach to the Ladbrokes platform, which now boasts a redesigned front end, faster site speeds, and improved user experience. The company reported that online NGR growth in H2 has exceeded internal forecasts.

The update also highlighted strong performance in international markets, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). During the first half of the year, the CEE region reported a 130% rise in online revenue, with betting revenue soaring by 213% to £181.5 million and gaming revenue climbing 22%.

With the UK back on a growth trajectory and its international markets thriving, Entain’s strategy appears to be paying off in key regions—much sooner than anticipated.
