Alberta’s regulated iGaming market generated CA$122.1m (US$87.2m) in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) between its launch on 13 July and 30 September, according to a performance report from Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).

The market recorded rising revenue throughout the period, alongside an increase in the number of licensed operators.

Monthly Revenue Increases

AiGC reported NAGGR of CA$22.2m (US$15.8m) in July, CA$43.3m (US$30.9m) in August and CA$56.6m (US$40.4m) in September.

Total betting handle for the three-month period reached CA$2.89bn (US$2.06bn).

The market launched with 15 licensed iGaming operators in July, increasing to 24 by the end of September.

“Regulation matters,” said AiGC CEO Dan Keene.

“This is a market where approved iGaming operators are held to high standards of accountability, and where revenue stays in the province to fund programs and services Albertans rely upon.”

Licensed Market Expands

By 24 October, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) had issued 42 iGaming operator licences, while its website listed 52 live iGaming sites. Some operators run multiple brands or sites.

The number of licensed offerings increased ahead of the 13 October deadline for unregulated operators to enter Alberta’s regulated market.

Keene said the early results indicated demand for a regulated environment with greater oversight and accountability.

“Early results indicate that Albertans value the strong oversight and greater accountability offered by a regulated market,” he said.

“We hope to continue educating Albertans about the risks associated with illegal offshore sites and move them onto regulated platforms where they have rights and recourse when iGaming.”

Online Casino Accounts For Largest Share

Casino gaming accounted for 75.6% of NAGGR in September, making it the largest market segment. Sports betting represented 19.5%, while live casino contributed 4.9%.

The market recorded 388,585 active player accounts during the month. This figure represents accounts rather than unique individuals, as players may hold accounts with multiple operators.

Average revenue per active player account was CA$146 in September.

Alberta Revenue-Sharing Framework

Alberta and Ontario both operate revenue-sharing models under which operators retain 80% of net iGaming revenue, with the province receiving the remaining 20%.

In Alberta, 3% of gross gaming revenue is allocated to First Nations and responsible gambling initiatives before the 80/20 revenue split is applied.
