UK Betting Markets Make Burnham Red-hot Favourite for Next PM After Starmer Resigns

UK political betting markets have been rapidly repriced after Keir Starmer officially announced his resignation as Prime Minister today, triggering an immediate Labour leadership contest that bookmakers believe is already heavily tilted in favour of Andy Burnham.

The announcement confirms a dramatic shift at the top of UK politics, with Starmer stepping down amid mounting pressure from within his own party. His resignation now opens the door for a fast-tracked Labour leadership race to determine the next Prime Minister.

Burnham dominates next Prime Minister odds

Bookmakers have reacted instantly, with Andy Burnham installed as the runaway favourite across multiple UK betting sites.

William Hill has reportedly priced Burnham as short as 1/50, reflecting an overwhelming implied probability that he will succeed Starmer.

Next Prime Minister betting odds

  1. Andy Burnham – 1/50
  2. Angela Rayner – 25/1
  3. Wes Streeting – 25/1
  4. Ed Miliband – 25/1
  5. Alistair Carns – 25/1
  6. Bar – 33/1

Other operators, including Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, are also in agreement that Burnham leads the field by a significant margin, with Ed Miliband emerging as a key alternative candidate in some markets.

“Red-hot favourite” as bookmakers react to political shock

Paddy Power confirmed Burnham’s position at the head of the market, linking his surge in the odds to his return to Westminster and growing support within Labour ranks.

A spokesperson for the bookmaker said:

“A new Labour Prime Minister could take over before the next General Election amid talk of a coup. Andy Burnham is the red-hot favourite with Paddy Power to be the next Prime Minister of the UK after Keir Starmer.”

They added that Burnham’s recent political momentum and parliamentary positioning have strengthened his leadership credentials at a critical moment.

Miliband also in frame as “safe pair of hands”

Bookmakers have also highlighted Ed Miliband as a potential compromise candidate if the leadership race becomes contested.

Paddy Power noted:

“Ed Miliband dreamed of being PM when he led Labour into the 2015 General Election… He could be seen as a safe pair of hands if Burnham fails to impress Labour MPs.”

Ladbrokes similarly place Miliband among the shorter-priced alternatives, alongside Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting, though still well behind Burnham in the outright market.

Leadership contest expected to move quickly

With Starmer’s resignation now confirmed, attention turns to the Labour Party’s internal process, which could see a new Prime Minister installed within weeks depending on whether a contested leadership race emerges or a single consensus candidate is backed.

For now, betting markets are sending a clear message: Andy Burnham is the clear frontrunner to become the next UK Prime Minister.
