German Regulator Launches Resource to Tackle Illegal Online Gambling

The German gambling regulator has published a new online resource aimed at raising awareness of unlicensed gambling operators.

Titled “Illegal Gambling on the Internet – Recognise, Avoid, Report”, the guide is designed for both consumers and staff at prevention and counselling centres. It provides practical insights into the markers that identify illegal brands and details how such operators can be reported to the Joint Gambling Authority of the States (GGL).

“Another focus is on raising awareness about the typical practices of illegal providers. These providers deliberately use misleading design and incentive mechanisms to bind players to their services and circumvent legal protections. The GGL explains these strategies to empower consumers to recognise and avoid such offers early on,” the regulator said.

“The GGL appeals to the public to be vigilant, especially during times of increased use of digital services, and to protect themselves from financial and personal harm. The new brochure compiles all relevant information on the topic of illegal online gambling and is available now.”

The resource represents a key step in Germany’s ongoing efforts to safeguard consumers and promote responsible gambling, providing a clear framework for identifying and reporting unlicensed operators.
