American bettors are expected to wager $400m more on March Madness this year compared to 2024, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA).

The trade body estimates that bets on men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments will reach $3.1bn, up from $2.7bn in 2024.

“March Madness is one of the most exciting times in American sports, with fans fired up for both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments,” said Joe Maloney, AGA’s senior vice president of strategic communications.

“As legal wagering expands across the US, more fans than ever have the opportunity to bet legally and responsibly.”

The AGA is also incorporating its 'Keep Your Cool' initiative, the latest addition to its responsible gaming campaign, into its March Madness coverage.

Meanwhile, sports betting regulation at a federal level has returned to the spotlight, with two US politicians reintroducing the Safe Bet Act.
