David Power passed away peacefully on July 8, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren, according to Flutter. Power was a cornerstone of the betting industry for several decades, with his family's involvement in betting tracing back to odds compilers at Tramore Racecourse in Ireland since 1895.

David Power managed the family betting shop business for several years before seeking expansion. In 1988, he partnered with Stewart Kenny and Vincent O’Reilly, who had previously sold their Kenny O’Reilly Bookmakers business to Coral. This partnership marked the birth of the Paddy Power brand.

Kenny and O’Reilly had opened 10 shops independently, which were then merged with the Power family’s 30 shops, rebranding them all under the Paddy Power name. The brand, named after David's son, continues to thrive today with his son serving as a marketing spokesman.

Throughout the 1990s, Paddy Power experienced significant growth under David Power's leadership as CEO from 1988 to 2002. The company expanded its operations online and added casino games to its offerings. Although Power stepped down as CEO in the early 2000s, he remained on the board until 2013. During his tenure, the company listed on both the Irish and London Stock Exchanges in 2000 and became the first bookmaker to launch on the Apple App Store in 2010.

Flutter remarked:

“As both a sharp bettor and an accomplished chartered accountant, David always had invaluable insights and challenging questions for successive management teams as a supportive shareholder, whether with regard to performance, product, or usually, our pricing. While he formally left the Paddy Power board in 2013, he always maintained a strong presence around the business.”
